El Santo is one of the most famous wrestlers in Mexican history, having expanded his career into comic books, movies and other media. Ultimately he set himself up as a sort of folk icon - The Man in the Silver Mask - a symbol of justice and strength for the common man.
Though a number of his movies feature werewolves, this was actually my first exposure to his work. The adventure begins when El Santo receives a message from someone who claims to be a professional werewolf hunter, telling him that there is a murderous pack of lycanthropes at loose in the town of Marsh, and that he is the only one who can put a stop to their evil. Though he is naturally skeptical at first, El Santo travels to the town after he is attacked by a pack of super-intelligent wild dogs. Once there he becomes embroiled in a centuries-old legend which will determine his destiny and the fate of the entire planet ...
Once you get over the very bizarre nature of having a wrestler as the "messiah", a sort of James Bond meets Superman figure, this is actually a very fun movie. I wouldn't say that it's a good movie exactly, but there are lots of great set pieces and it all builds to a very exciting finale. It is consistently entertaining all the way through, which is more than can be said for many werewolf movies of this era - and this is coming from someone who doesn't even like wrestling.
"Santo vs the She Wolves" is a very diverting way to spend an hour and a half. I'm not about to go out and buy the rest of his filmography, but I did enjoy watching this one.
An interesting concept in this movie is that El Santo - The Man in the Silver Mask - is effectively the silver bullet. According to legend, the curse of the werewolves can only be ended by a silver symbol, and in this case that means Santo. The werewolves, meanwhile, want to make sure that he joins their cause so that they can take over the world. They are led by the queen of she-wolves and a man named Lican, who is the king of all lycanthropes.
When they transform, our werewolves turn rather hairy and grow some sharper teeth. They also seems to have mastery over dogs and wolves, which is a very handy skill to have. They can be killed by a silver bullet or by some fancy wrestling moves. Naturally.
