So, yeah. The Amazing Screw-On Head. It was a one-shot comic from Hellboy-creator Mike Mignola (meaning there was just the one issue), which the Sci-Fi channel crafted into this pilot. It's kind of a comedy crafted for comic book nerds and horror fans, a parody of the institutions of both genres. Very surreal and peculiar.
The main character is a paranormal agent in the employ of President Lincoln, who is, yes, a head. A head voiced by Paul Giamatti, that can be screwed onto various robotic bodies. With that concept, how could they possibly go wrong? In this pilot episode he comes up against an old foe named Emperor Zombie (voiced by David Hyde Pierce), who has a bunch of hideous servants such as a vampire, a werewolf, and a monkey. Yes, a monkey. That pretty much sums up the shows sense of humour, which is all-in-all lot of fun. The episode is very fast-moving since there's a lot of story and a lot of jokes to fit in. Indeed, there's no shortage of crazy ideas to fill the twenty minutes.
This pilot episode may still be made into a full series by the Sci-Fi channel. If so, it'll certainly be worth checking out.
The story opens in the "Museum of Dangerous Books and Papers". Nice. An old man and woman cower in a library room, with squads of soldiers trying to protect them from an imminent threat. One of the soldiers discovers a 'wanted' poster with the old womans face on it, showing that she's guilty of lycanthropy among various other offences. Oops. Before you can say "watch out", the old woman has transformed into a huge werewolf, hurling soldiers around and kidnapping the old man. Fun. The character survives, so if the show is picked up we may see more of her.
