Over the past nine seasons, "Supernatural" has always been at its best when it has stuck with the good old-fashioned "monster of the week" style episodes, and especially when it doesn't take itself too seriously. What it doesn't always do terribly well is the whole season-arc plot thing. While the introduction of angels and the forces of Heaven has had its good moments, it's already starting to wear somewhat thin - and guess what! Our big bad guy this season is another hot female demon. Hasn't this show had enough of those by now?
The good news is that this is a "monster of the week" episode. The bad news is that it centres on Garth, an occasionally appearing character played by DJ Quall who seems to have been introduced as a way of telling the fans that even awkward geeky-looking guys can be badass hunters. Sort of a Wesley Crusher character, and like Wesley he's really just somewhat annoying. It's a shame, because the story itself is quite interesting.
Sam and Dean haven't seen Garth in some time, but they both rush to his side when they find out that he has been admitted to a hospital under lock and key - accused of killing a cow. After he tries once to escape their grasp, they eventually come to the revelation that he is married to a werewolf - and is one himself! In fact, he has joined a whole pack of (apparently) Christian werewolves who claim to be peaceful and law-abiding. Of course, regular views of the show know that it doesn't often deal in shades of grey where demons and other evil creatures are involved, so Dean is quite right to be suspicious about them ...
Far from being one of my favourite episodes, though it does have its good points.
